Lecture in Arts Libris (Barcelona)
This post is also available in: Spanish, Catalan
Ubicuo Studio was invited to give a lecture about publishing artist books for iPad in Arts Libris (Barcelona). We are so happy because the everyone was really interested in what we do and in our latest book published Unlimited Sobrassada. We first showed people the printed version of Unlimited Sobrassada, with its translations and a map to read them. Then we showed them Unlimited Sobrassada for iPad and, finally, we spoke about 3 revolutions that will change the way people read and enjoy culture.
The distribution revolution
This revolution is possible thanks to the fact that the digital products are not physical products. Everything changes when you don’t have to:
- keep your product in a safe place
- have a control about how many products left you have
- have to send your products through mail
- have to pay for every produced copy
Digital products are the contrary of scarcity. You can download 100.000 times our App and the production cost will be the same. Digital products are ubiquotous: they can be found 24 hours/day, 7days/week, 365days/year. You don’t need to lose money through distribution, so your products can be really affordable and you (publisher), the author and the buyer are the winners -not the intermediary.
Another distribution revolution is the chance of making an universal multilingual book/app. This way you don’t have to pay for several productions and you can save money and, of course, make your work and your project more known worldwide.
The content revolution
This is a really interesting revolution. A book-app with multimedia content: video, hypertext, audio, interactive games… Infinite possibilities and just one thing can stop us: imagination. At Ubicuo Studio we’re really creative persons, so stay tuned to our new Apps because they will surprise you!
The content we can publish in an App lets us offer a better experience to the readers and culture lovers.
The reader user revolution
This is one of the best revolutions! The main mission of a published cultural project is to reach its public/audience. This audience deserves the maximum respect - and we respect them. That’s the reason we always think about the users when we develop applications. What they want, who they are, what they need,… One of the aims of our applications is to make the user enjoy.
In our applications the reader becomes an active part of the project. For instance, if you’re an Unlimited Sobrassada user you can get inspired by Jaume C. Pons poems and feel like tweeting a poem. You can do this from inside our App! This way you’re having a shared reading experience in opposite of a lonely reading experience.
We want to reach all kind of audiences. To accomplish this mission we designed Unlimited Sobrassada in a concrete way: we decided to give the possibility to the user to choose between different ways of enjoying the book. The user can read the book in a lineal way, he/she can also watch only the videos, he/she can read only the poems comparing the translations with the original poem, he/she can listen at the poems recited by the poet,.. Every moment and every reader a different way of reading the book. For instance, a little girl of 7years old visited us at our stand in Arts Libris. She was really amazed by Unlimited Sobrassada - she wanted to watch all the videos of Jaume C. Pons reciting poems. While she was really interested in the iPad version of the book, she wasn’t interested in the printed version. We think this is a really great way to reach potential readers and to regain lost readers.
